LASEMA READS RIOT ACTS TO TRADERS WITHOUT INSURANCE POLICY

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has issued a three-month ultimatum to traders at Ifelodun Plank Market, Demurin, Ketu in Agboyi-Ketu council area to put safety and precautionary measures in place or have the market sealed.

Director General of LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, who gave the order at a stakeholders meeting with the leadership of Market in Alausa said the agency would be acting tough this year and would carry out lots of enforcement to ensure compliance.

The popular market which was razed in 2013 was also gutted by fire on the twenty eight of December, last year, with many property destroyed

Dr. Oke-Osanyitolu attributed many of the disasters experienced in the State to carelessness and stressed that henceforth, this would no longer be tolerated as LASEMA would partner with the State Ministry of Justice to prosecute recalcitrant persons.

Revealing that efforts are ongoing to establish emergency committees in all markets across the State to avert disasters, the LASEMA DG announced that the usual financial assistance would no longer be given to traders without insurance policy.

In his reaction, the Chairman,of the Plank Market, Alhaji Aliu Bello assured that the traders would comply with the decisions of the State government to move to the new plank market once completed.

Alhaji Bello who pegged property lost in the December fire incident at over three hundred million naira, promised that the plank traders would abide with all safety rules.

Our correspondent, Yemisi Dada, reports that the State government is regenerating the Ketu Plank market with a view to making it less prone to man made disaster.
