Lagos Inaugurates Blue Box For Waste Recycling.

As part of efforts towards zero tolerance for waste disposal and sustained culture of waste recycling in Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has introduced the Lagos State Blue Box Recycling Programme to ensure cleanliness in the State.

At the ceremony at Lagos Island, Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that the aim of the programme was not to rely on the old ways of waste disposal but to encourage waste to wealth.

He stressed that the quest to rid Lagos of refuse must be collective, calling on everyone to be responsible to their immediate environment.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Olatunji Bello stressed that one of the challenges faced in the state was the alarming population growth which has impacted negatively on availability of space for infrastructural development.

In a remark, the Managing Director, Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin who said the Blue Box Program would encourage and enhance separation of recyclable materials from the general waste at the point of generation, urged every household to get the blue and black containers for recycling and waste disposal.

Our Correspondent Yemisi Dada reports that highpoint of the event was distribution of the boxes and waste bags to everyone in attendance.
