The Lagos State Assembly has set-up a committee to investigate the purchase of eight hundred and twenty buses by the administration of former governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
The move by the Assembly to investigate the purchase of buses came on the heels of a motion by a member representing Eti-osa constituency two, Mr. Gbolahan Yishawu during plenary.
Mr. Yishawu noted that during the Executive/ Legislative forum held in September 2017, Mr. Ambode informed the House that 5,000 buses would be bought by the government.
He stated that the executive proposed to spend N17 billion to purchase the buses in 2017 budget, while in the 2018 and 2019 budgets, the state government proposed N24 Billion and N7 Billion respectively.
According to Mr. Yishawu, the House was worried that 520 buses were still awaiting clearance from the Port incurring demurrage and that they were purchased with taxpayers’ money without approval by the assembly.
Speaker of the House, Chief Mudashiru Obasa in his submission maintained that the House needed to prevent waste because the expenditure had been done.
Our Assembly Correspondents reports that the Speaker subsequently constituted an adhoc committee headed by Mr. Fatai Mojeed to look into the matter and report back to the House in due course.
