The Governor of Borno State, Prof Babagana Zulum has been given the thumbs up for
speaking out on alleged consistent extortion of locals by soldiers posted to the state to fight insurgency.
The commendation came from the Human and Environmental Development Agenda, HEDA, a Lagos based anti corruption Non-governmental Organisation.
In a statement HEDA described Prof Zulum’s condemnation of the extortion by soldiers as
a show of moral highground.
It says that the action is a demonstration of responsibility and leadership quality.
It also commended the Nigerian Army for promising to
probe the allegation.
HEDA said its own findings from volunteers in the North East
confirmed the position of the Borno State Governor.
The governor was said to be on his way to Jakana when his convoy observed a traffic
gridlock occasioned by soldiers and policemen attached to Operation
Lafiya Dole said to be extorting cash from motorists.
HEDA said the allegations of the Governor has reinforced widespread
public complaints about soldiers extorting locals in the troubled zones.
The statement signed by the Chairman of HEDA, Mr Olanrewaju
Suraju says it will be
monitoring the probe to know it’s outcome.
